Danny Murphy: Why Liverpool v Man United is bigger for Jurgen Klopp

Danny Murphy believes Saturday’s north-west derby at Anfield is a bigger game for Liverpool than Manchester United.

The Reds are looking to get back to winning ways following a disappointing run of one victory in their last seven games in all competitions to raise concerns about their lack of progress under Klopp.

Liverpool lost 5-0 to Premier League leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium at the start of September, although Sadio Mane’s sending off gave Pep Guardiola’s side a helping hand.

Klopp’s side are already seven points adrift of Manchester United following seven Premier League games after dropping points against Burnley, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Watford.

Manchester United have won six of their opening seven Premier League games as well as a credible 2-2 stalemate with Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium last month.

The Red Devils haven’t played a team in the top five so far this term so Liverpool will represent the first real test of Manchester United’s title credentials.

Former Liverpool midfielder Murphy claimed that the huge Premier League clash is more important for Klopp’s players than Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s a bigger game for Liverpool,” Murphy told The Debate on Sky Sports on Thursday night.

“Man United have already earned the right to have a slip up. They haven’t lost. They’ve hardly put in a bad performance. They’d be forgiven one.

“They still have the points on the board. Liverpool to lose to Man United means the gap gets bigger and the questions marks get bigger.”

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to finish two spots above Manchester United.
