Jan Molby believes Liverpool need to hope for a Chelsea implosion if Brendan Rodgers’s side want to secure Champions League football for next season.

The Reds closed the gap on the Blues to seven points after a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, with Chelsea playing out a 2-2 draw with Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Chelsea still have to make the trip to Anfield in the Premier League, with the Blues also facing the Red Devils in a FA Cup quarter-final replay and a two-legged Europa League last-eight tie against Basel in a demanding run-in.

Former Liverpool midfielder Molby reckons Spurs have their top-four place sewn up, but the Dane believes there is a chance the Reds could pip the west London side to the final Champions League spot.

“If you look at each game Liverpool have got left to play they’re all winnable,” Molby wrote in his column in the Liverpool Echo. “But it’s still a big ask as when was the last time we won eight or nine league games in a row?

“We’re relying on other results and Chelsea are the key for me.

“I can’t see Spurs dropping out of the top four. Although they lost, I was very impressed by them at Anfield last weekend.

“But Chelsea is the interesting one. They have a tough schedule of fixtures and I wonder what Rafael Benítez’s priority is.

“Is he really concerned about top four considering he won’t be there next season or does he want to stick another trophy on his CV before he moves on?

“Liverpool just have to take it game by game and try to maintain their recent consistency. We found a way to beat Spurs – pressuring them into mistakes and making the most of the chances which came our way.”
