‘Liverpool need extra depth & quality to compete in title race’

Tommy Smith believes Liverpool must add extra depth and quality to their squad if the Reds want to compete with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

The Reds are currently facing an injury crisis with six players sidelined after Daniel Agger was forced off during their 2-0 win against Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

And former Liverpool captain Smith reckons Brendan Rodgers must spend in the current transfer window if the Reds are going to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

“It is the business off the pitch, as much as the business on it, which will be crucial to us over the next four weeks,” Smith wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“We have got to add to the squad to give it extra depth and quality if we are going to challenge and even topple the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

“The lads performed well against City and Chelsea over Christmas but got nothing for it. Yet you can’t help but think that had Brendan Rodgers had a bit more depth to call upon, it might well have been different.

“It must be frustrating for the manager and he’ll hope those players at the top of his wish list can be smoothly brought on board for the second half of the season.

“There are loads of names being linked with us, as ever, but nothing concrete. We just have to be quietly confident the club is working hard behind the scenes to get people in.”
