Jamie Redknapp claims Jurgen Klopp to blame for Liverpool’s goalless draw with Man United

Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Jurgen Klopp deserves criticism for settling for a draw with Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool were unable to find a way past Manchester United’s man of the match David De Gea on Merseyside despite registering 20 shots on goal in the Premier League clash.

The Reds were denied a winner when David De Gea somehow managed to keep out Joel Matip’s close-range effort to ensure Manchester United left Anfield with a point.

Jose Mourinho has been widely criticised for “parking the bus” in the north-west derby as Manchester United successfully protected their unbeaten start to the 2017-18 season.

Some pundits including Mark Lawrenson suggested Manchester United’s performance was even more negative than their goalless stalemate at Liverpool in October 2016.

However, former Liverpool captain Redknapp claimed that Klopp was to blame for the goalless draw despite bringing on Daniel Sturridge, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Dominic Solanke in search of three points.

“Mourinho is not bothered by the spectacle,” Mourinho told the Daily Mail.

“Staying unbeaten was the only thing on his agenda. You have to ask questions of Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, not Mourinho.

“It was up to Liverpool to unlock the door but they could not deliver. With 10 minutes to go, United looked there for the taking but Klopp took off Mo Salah and Philippe Coutinho — Liverpool’s two most dangerous players on Saturday.

“I do not blame Mourinho for the dull display. By the end, Klopp was as guilty in settling for a draw.”

Manchester United are two points behind leaders Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table following eight games.

The Citizens were 7-2 winners against Stoke City at the Etihad Stadium last weekend to underline their status as title favourites.
