Liverpool ready for Champions League football, declares Joe Allen
Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen says the Reds have nothing to fear in the Champions League next season
Joe Allen believes Liverpool have nothing to fear in the Champions League next season.
The Reds secured their return to Europe’s premier club competition after a second-place finish behind champions Manchester City.
I think the performances against the likes of Manchester City show we are ready for the Champions League
Liverpool haven’t competed in the Champions League since 2009/10 and struggled in the Europa League during Brendan Rodgers’s first term at Anfield.
And Wales international Allen feels Liverpool are better equipped to cope at Europe’s top table next season.
“I can’t wait. Obviously this season is just finishing but that is one of the big reasons to celebrate, we will be in the Champions League next season,” Allen is quoted as saying by the ECHO.
“As a player you always set targets and goals and one of them is, if you can get there, is to experience Champions League football. It’s certainly something that as a young footballer you dream about. It is the reason you work hard every day, you strive to try to get there.”
Allen added: “I think the performances against the likes of Manchester City show we are ready for the Champions League.
“That’s been one of the biggest differences this year, last year our record against the big sides was slightly disappointing but this season we felt confident we could go into any game home or away and win.
“The record we have here at Anfield this season will play a big part (next season) as well. The support has been incredible.
“We look forward to next year and whether it be in the league, Champions League or the Cup matches it is going to be a difficult place for teams to come and play, there’s no doubt about that.”
