Tim Sherwood described Liverpool as “relentless” in the race for a fourth-place finish after Tottenham Hotspur were emphatic winners at Newcastle United.

Emmanuel Adebayor finished from close range in the 19th minute before Paulinho effectively wrapped up three points within eight second-half minutes courtesy of a simple finish at St James’ Park.

Spurs striker Adebayor scored his eighth goal of the season with seven minutes remaining before substitute Nacer Chadli curled a long-range finish past Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Spurs remain three points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool after the Reds were dramatic 3-2 winners at Craven Cottage, and Tottenham manager Sherwood challenged his side to stay on the Reds’ coattails.

“I’m a perfectionist. There was a spell at start of the second half when Hugo [Lloris] had to pull off some saves,” Sherwood told BBC Sport.

“The boys looked sharp from the start. We’ve got to keep on the tail of Liverpool. They are relentless. I hope they keep on checking over their shoulders and see Spurs are still there.”

Tottenham, who suffered a 5-0 loss to Brendan Rodgers’ men at White Hart Lane in December, travel to top-four rivals Liverpool on 30 March.
