Jurgen Klopp reveals Liverpool wanted to make this signing in January
The Liverpool manager lifts the lids on the club's attempts to sign a winger in the January transfer window
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Liverpool tried to sign a winger in the January transfer window.
The Reds boss led Liverpool to a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League last season to secure a long-awaited return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.
Liverpool struggled badly with injuries in the second half of the 2016-17 campaign, which almost allowed Arsenal to sneak fourth spot on the final day of the season.
Klopp didn’t bring in any new signings in the 2017 January transfer window despite the charismatic German head coach recruiting seven new players last summer.
However, the Liverpool manager has revealed that the 18-time English champions wanted to sign a winger in January but couldn’t get a deal done.
“We did not have a squad able to avert this at that time,” Klopp told Kicker, as quoted by ESPN.
“We could have certainly used a new player, for instance an attacking winger. And we tried in the winter, but the right one was either not available for us or just not there.”
Liverpool appointed Klopp as their new manager in October 2015 after a below-par start to the 2015-16 season under Brendan Rodgers.
The Merseyside outfit have never won the Premier League title despite finishing as runners-up three times.
