Liverpool urged to sign 24-year-old defender after ending Virgil van Dijk interest
David Thompson wants to see Liverpool sign Michael Keane after ending interest in Virgil van Dijk
Liverpool should switch their focus to Burnley defender Michael Keane after ending their pursuit of Virgil van Dijk, according to David Thompson.
The Reds have been heavily linked with a club-record transfer deal to bring the highly-rated Netherlands international to Anfield from Premier League rivals Southampton.
However, Liverpool released a statement on Wednesday evening that confirmed the Merseyside club have ended their interest in the 25-year-old former Celtic star.
Liverpool conceded 42 times in 38 games in the Premier League last season to highlight their defensive problems under Jurgen Klopp.
Former Liverpool midfielder Thompson wants to see the Reds pursue Burnely’s Keane as a potential alternative to Van Dijk.
Thompson wrote on Twitter: “Virgil Van dyke is good but not 60/75 million good imo Micheal Keane at 30 million is good business #lfc”
Liverpool qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2014 thanks to a fourth-placed finish last season.
The Reds have already agreed to sign England Under-21 international Dominic Solanke in a free transfer from Premier League champions Chelsea.
Klopp was appointed as Brendan Rodgers’ successor in October 2015.
