Ian Wright: Liverpool need to keep 25-year-old attacker, sell Philippe Coutinho
The Arsenal legend tells Liverpool that keeping Sadio Mane is more important than holding onto Philippe Coutinho this summer
Ian Wright has told Liverpool to prioritise keeping Sadio Mane rather than Philippe Coutinho.
The Merseyside outfit are facing a battle to keep their Brazil international at Anfield beyond the summer transfer window.
Barcelona have already made three offers to sign the 25-year-old but Liverpool have refused to entertain the notion of selling the South American.
Coutinho handed in a transfer request earlier this month and Barcelona are rumoured to be preparing a £136m bid to sign the Brazil international.
Liverpool have been coping without their number 10 thanks in part to the impressive performances of Senegal international Sadio Mane.
The former Southampton attacker has scored in both of Liverpool’s opening two Premier League games following a 3-3 draw at Watford and then a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace.
Mane’s best performances came in the Champions League despite failing to get on the score sheet after Jurgen Klopp’s side eased to a 6-3 win against Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim.
Former Arsenal striker Wright told Liverpool that keeping Mane should be a priority, adding that the Reds should cut their losses on the Brazilian star.
“If two teams were coming for Mane and Coutinho right now, would you want Mane or Coutinho to go right now?” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I’d want Mane to stay. I would sell Coutinho. Cut your losses with him.”
Mane matched Coutinho’s tally of 13 goals in his first Premier League season as a Liverpool player.
