Jamie Redknapp backs Liverpool to make 26-year-old signing of the summer
The former Liverpool captain believes Jurgen Klopp could still signing Southampton star Virgil van Dijk
Jamie Redknapp is still confident Liverpool will sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer.
The Netherlands international was heavily linked with a move to the Anfield outfit earlier in the summer transfer window.
Indeed, Liverpool were reported to be closing in on a club-record £60m deal to sign the Dutch defender ahead of Chelsea and Manchester City.
However, in an embarrassing turn of events, the Reds had to issue a statement apologising to Southampton about their pursuit of the 26-year-old centre-half.
Liverpool confirmed that their interest in the former Celtic star had come to an end despite Van Dijk’s apparent desire to work with Jurgen Klopp.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have all been linked with Van Dijk since Liverpool’s statement but a deal has failed to materialise.
In fact, it has been suggested by some ex-professionals that the Merseyside outfit could still strike a deal to recruit the Southampton star.
And former Liverpool captain Redknapp believes Van Dijk could end up being the signing of the summer if Klopp manages to get a deal over the line.
“I’m not sure the Virgil van Dijk story is finished. I still think there’s a little bit left to go with that one,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“Liverpool have obviously pulled back at the moment but I still see Van Dijk moving. He wants to play for Jurgen Klopp and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Liverpool signing him.
“That could be one of the signing of the summer because he would make such a difference. He’s colossal.
“He’s fantastic defensively, good great forward, he scores goals and I think he’s exactly what Liverpool need. If they can find a way of getting him in a red shirt next season that would be a great signing for them.”
Liverpool have signed England Under-20 international Dominic Solanke and AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah in the summer transfer window so far.
