Liverpool transfers: Alexis Sanchez deal is done, claims Reds legend
Liverpool transfers: Phil Thompson believes Luis Suárez will move to Spain this summer, with Alexis Sanchez heading to Anfield
Phil Thompson has suggested that Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez.
Reds striker Luis Suarez became embroiled in the third biting controversy of his career after clashing with Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup on Tuesday, leading to reports Liverpool could sell the troublesome forward this summer.
I heard things from people, newspaper guys who are very close to the ground at Liverpool, saying that the Sanchez deal was actually done
Manager Brendan Rodgers has been linked with a move for the Chile international in recent weeks, whilst Barcelona and Real Madrid are known admirers of the 27-year-old Reds talisman.
And former Liverpool captain Thompson revealed that he has been told a deal for Sanchez to join the 18-time English champions is already finalised, and is tipping Suarez to move to La Liga.
Discussing Suarez, Thompson told Newstalk: “It is a very difficult one. He has tried to get himself right. It will be what the club thinks.”
He added: “What will happen to Luis Suarez, will he go? Is he angling for a move? Even just yesterday I heard things from people, newspaper guys who are very close to the ground at Liverpool, saying that the Sanchez deal was actually done.
“Will it now angle for them to ease Suarez out of Liverpool. It looks that way.”
Thompson added that Suarez has embarrassed Liverpool yet again after appearing to bite Chiellini during Uruguay’s 1-0 victory over Italy in Group D.
“I think first of all he embarrasses himself, but it brings embarrassment on the football club because he is one of our employees,” Thompson added.
“It is not very nice when you have this thrown at you again.
“You look at the biting scandals pre-season and his movement away from his clubs because that seems to proceed his angle for a move last time which the club stood against.
“I think it is terribly sad for my football club. I don’t know if Luis Suarez felt embarrassment because he said he bumped into the guy.
“He has brought shame on a World Cup that has been sensational.”
