Liverpool transfers: ‘Brendan Rodgers facing major Luis Suarez headache’

Liverpool transfers: Neil Warnock feels the Reds won't be anywhere near the same team without Luis Suárez next season

Brendan Rodgers is facing a major problem if Luis Suarez leaves for La Liga this summer, according to Neil Warnock.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have been heavily linked with a big-money move for the Uruguay international, who scored twice in a 2-1 victory over England at the World Cup last Thursday.

Like with Gareth Bale, when they want somebody they go out and get them. If I was Brendan I’d be more concerned than I was last summer

Rodgers managed to convince Suarez to stay at Liverpool last summer despite a bid from Arsenal, and the Reds went on to finish as Premier League runners-up and seal a return to the Champions League.

But former Queens Park Rangers manager Warnock reckons Liverpool will find it hard to keep the 27-year-old South American if Barcelona or Madrid come calling.

“His major problem is if Luis Suarez is now swallowed up by Real Madrid or Barcelona, because if he is, Liverpool will not be anywhere near the same team,” Warnock is quoted as saying.

“Like with Gareth Bale, when they want somebody they go out and get them. If I was Brendan I’d be more concerned than I was last summer.”

England face Costa Rica in their final Group D game on Tuesday after crashing out of the competition last week after just two group-stage outings.

And Warnock, who has previously managed Sheffield United, feels Rodgers or Everton boss Roberto Martinez would be an excellent replacement for Roy Hodgson.

“I think if you look at Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool and Roberto Martinez at Everton. They wont leave, but [the FA should] give somebody like that a five-year contract and say ‘go with the kids’,” Warnock added.

“He (Rodgers) changed Liverpool around. He went in there and knew how they wanted to play straight away, got Andy Carroll out and got them playing.
“And on the international scene it’s got to be like that.”
