Brendan Rodgers needs to sign five or six new players this summer, according to Liverpool legend Steve McManaman.

The Reds completed their first summer signing on Monday as Southampton striker Rickie Lambert completed a £4m switch to the Premier League runners-up.

Liverpool will need a significant number of players if they are to compete in the league and the Champions League

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Lambert’s former Southampton team-mate Adam Lallana as well as Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can and Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno.

And McManaman, who won the FA Cup and League Cup with the Reds before joining Real Madrid in 1999, feels Rodgers needs to strengthen his squad significantly ahead of the new season.

“I think Liverpool need to bulk up in all areas. If they can bring five or six players in who will improve their team and improve their squad, if you’re a Liverpool fan, that’s what you want,” McManaman told Liverpool Echo.

“Liverpool will need a significant number of players if they are to compete in the league and the Champions League.

“I like the spine of the team to improve. If they can improve on those areas, I think they will be great. Steven Gerrard’s not going to play forever. Jordan Henderson andJoe Allen have done well this year, but you can always improve, can’t you?

“If you can bring in another centre forward, you will make the fans very happy.”
