Liverpool transfers: Jamie Carragher urges Reds to spend wisely

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to spend their transfer budget wisely this summer after the £75m sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

The Uruguay international’s transfer to Camp Nou was confirmed on Friday following intense speculation about his future, with the 27-year-old set to pen a five-year deal at the Spanish club next week.

Attentions at Anfield will now turn to how Liverpool intend to replace a player who scored 31 goals and made 12 assists in 33 Premier League games last season.

And former Reds defender Carragher has warned the club that they must reinvest the cash generated by Suarez’s sale by signing proven-quality players.

“Liverpool will desperately miss him, there can be no disputing that, but the time was right for him to leave and the club have got the best cash deal they could, as was the case when [Fernando] Torres headed to Chelsea in January 2011,” Carragher wrote in a column for the Daily Mail.

“What they must make sure does not happen is falling into the trap Tottenham did 12 months ago of spending a giant windfall on players about whom nobody is sure where they play or what they do.

“They have to use this finance to build on the foundations Suarez helped lay last season.”

The ex-England centre-half described Suarez as one of the best players he has ever lined up with.

“During my 16 years at Liverpool Suarez, [Michael] Owen and Torres were the three best strikers I played alongside,” he added.

“Robbie Fowler was not at his peak when I was making my way in the first team, but Suarez was top of that all-star list.

“Luis used to do things on the pitch that were so audacious, you could only laugh in amazement.”
