Liverpool transfers: Pepe Reina admits he would love to return to Barcelona after being sent out on loan to Napoli by the Reds
Pepe Reina says he is hoping to seal a return to Barcelona amid growing doubts over his long-term Liverpool future.
Brendan Rodgers agreed to allow the Spain international to move on a season-long loan to Napoli after signing Simon Mignolet in a £9m deal from Sunderland.
The 31-year-old, who started his career at Barcelona, was a reported target of the Spanish side this summer but a move failed to materialise as Victor Valdes committed himself to the Catalan side until the end of current season.
The Barça shot stopper is expected to leave Camp Nou at the end of his contract next summer, and Reina would love to return to Spanish champions.
“It would be great to return to Barcelona,” Reina told Radio Catalunya.
“I am very happy that my name is being mentioned, but my goal right now is to put in a good season with Napoli.
“In the summer we will see. I imagine that they will have spoken to a lot of goalkeepers and will have short-listed a number of them.
“We will see what happens next year and we will see what happens with Victor Valdes.”
Reina made 394 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool after the shot stopper moved to the Reds in a £6m deal from Villarreal.
