Pepe Reina has urged the Liverpool board to back manager Brendan Rodgers in the summer transfer window.

The Northern Irishman has spent just under £50m – on Joe Allen, Fabio Borini, Oussama Assaidi, Samid Yesil, Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho – since replacing Kenny Dalglish at the Anfield helm in May 2012.

Liverpool have made steady progress over the course of the season under Rodgers.

And Reina believes further investment is required in the summer to help the Merseyside out improve and compete for silverware next season.

“This year has been important for us in terms of getting to know what the manager wants and develop the ideas,” Reina is quoted as saying by the Guardian.

“Then we have to be ready for the very first game of next season to challenge.

“Obviously we will need some help from the board but I think the basis is well settled. We know the ideas and philosophies of the manager. It is getting better and better so hopefully we will be ready to compete.”

Reina is also optimistic Liverpool’s 21-goal striker Luis Suárez will stay at the Merseyside outfit beyond the summer.

“Liverpool is very lucky to have Luis,” Reina said. “Every day I am proud to say that I share a dressing room with such a big player.

“He is 100 per cent all the time. Obviously we will see what happens in the future. Everybody wants him to stay with the team.”
