Liverpool should definitely keep Luis Suarez, according to former Reds sporting director Damien Comolli.

The Frenchman, who left Liverpool in 2012, is responsible for striking the £22.75m deal for the Uruguay international which saw Suarez swap Ajax for Anfield in January 2011.

However, the 27-year-old could soon be leaving the Reds after receiving a four month ban from football-related activity handed out by Fifa after biting Giorgio Chiellini in Uruguay’s 1-0 win against Italy last week.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have been linked with a big-money swoop for Suarez, but Comolli feels the Reds should hang onto to the South American despite his penchant for causing controversy.

“If I believe the reports in the press… I would definitely keep him,” Comolli told BBC Radio Five Live.

“I’m not sure Liverpool are in control of the situation because if he’s got a release clause in his contract, then the problem is out of their hands.

“But if they are in control, they will keep him. He played 33 games last season and scored 31 goals. Without that Liverpool would not have finished where they finished.”

Comolli added: “Who do you replace him with? There is nobody like him around. If there was, Real Madrid and Barcelona would go after them and not Suarez.”
