Robbie Fowler believes that two new central defenders should be top of Liverpool’s transfer wish-list this summer.

The Reds were pipped to the Premier League title by Manchester City on Sunday as Brendan Rodgers’ men finished two points behind Manuel Pellegrini’s champions.

They need an experienced star, someone in a Jamie Carragher mould

Liverpool had no problems in attack this season, with the Merseysiders having scored 101 goals in the top-flight this term.

But Liverpool legend Fowler feels that the Reds’ defence is in serious need of reinforcements ahead of next season.

“Liverpool still need two centre-halves,” Fowler told talkSPORT.

“That’s not be being disrespectful to the players who are there, but they need a commanding vocal centre-half, someone who knows the game.

“They need an experienced star, someone in a Jamie Carragher mould.”

Fowler, who scored 183 goals for the Reds, added: “Liverpool will become stronger. Everyone might be saying, ‘well, they’ve had their chance this year’ but I think Liverpool will sign some good players.

“The players who are currently there will also benefit from this season.”
