Liverpool transfers: Rickie Lambert a good signing, says Mark Lawrenson

Rickie Lambert is a good signing for Liverpool, according to former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson.

The 32-year-old striker is expected to complete a £4m move to Anfield in the coming days after the Southampton talisman passed a medical on Saturday before returning to England duty.

Most important of all, Lambert is a good player. He holds the ball up well, he is good in the air, good from set-pieces and he works ever so hard

Lambert has scored 28 goals in 75 Premier League appearances after the former Bristol Rovers striker helped the Saints secure their return to the top-flight in 2012.

And former Liverpool defender Lawrenson feels the England international will offer a lot to manager Brendan Rodgers.

“Many of us were surprised when it emerged that Rickie Lambert’s name was high up on Brendan Rodgers’ transfer wish-list,” Lawrenson wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“While all the focus has been on his Southampton team-mates Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren, nobody linked Lambert with a move to Anfield.

“But his transfer, which is expected to have been completed by the time you read this, gives the Reds many different options, that is the first thing.

“The strength of Rickie’s character is also not in question because of where he has come from and the number of times he has been knocked back and managed to get back up.

“No doubt he will have a point to prove having been released by Liverpool as a teenager, but Lambert will be no trouble for Rodgers.

“He will be easy to manage because he will be so grateful of this move back to his boyhood club.

“But most important of all, Lambert is a good player. He holds the ball up well, he is good in the air, good from set-pieces and he works ever so hard.”
