Steven Gerrard says he will try to use his influence as Liverpool captain to convince Luis Suárez to remain at Anfield.

The Uruguay international’s future is still up in the air after the 26-year-old expressed his desire to leave the Reds and join Arsenal following two unsuccessful bids from the Gunners.

Liverpool owner John W Henry and manager Brendan Rodgers have both been emphatic in their stance Suárez won’t be sold this summer, particularly to top-four rivals Arsenal.

And Gerrard, 33, desperately wants the 18-time English champions to keep their best players, insisting the South American won’t be joining any of Liverpool’s Premier Leaguer rivals.

“If I can use my influence to try to make him stay I will try to do that,” Gerrard told a news conference ahead of England’s friendly against Scotland.

“For Liverpool to move forward it’s important we keep our best players.

“I really don’t know what is going to happen with him but I’m really confident he won’t be going to any one else in England.”

Suárez, who scored 23 Premier League goals for the Reds last season, joined Liverpool in a £22.75m deal from Ajax in the January transfer window in 2011.
