Liverpool will look to sign “two or three” players during the summer transfer window, according to the club’s first team coach Steve Clarke.

Clarke believes the Reds will not need a major overhaul before next season after their remarkable turnaround under Kenny Dalglish.

Dalglish, who signed Andy Carroll and Luis Suárez for a combined total of £57m in January, has led the Reds up to sixth in the Premier League table but Clarke says the Merseysiders will add a couple of players if possible.

“We have a decent squad here, a lot of good players who have shown that for us,” said Clarke. “If we can find two or three players that can add to the squad then that is what we should do.

“If we can’t find the right players to improve us at the right time then I think we have enough to keep us moving forward.”

Clarke also highlighted the number of youngsters breaking into the first team from Liverpool’s academy, including the likes of Jay Spearing, John Flanagan, Jack Robinson and Martin Kelly.

“We’ve also got the young players coming through – that has been a big plus for everyone at the club this season,” continued Clarke.

“If we can continue with the nucleus of the established players we have and keep adding one or two kids and then maybe improve one or two in the summer.”

And Liverpool boss Dalglish, who was confirmed as the club’s permanent manager earlier this month, echoed Clarke’s sentiments.

“The squad only needs tinkering,” said Dalglish. “If people want to see the best players and assets of the football club wearing a red shirt, that’s what we want to try and provide.

“We want to get the highest quality of player in that we can. That’s what position we have been put into, and that’s what we will try to do.”
