Liverpool won’t rush new Brendan Rodgers deal, insists Ian Ayre
Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre says the Reds won't enter talks with Brendan Rodgers over a new deal until the summer
Liverpool won’t rush into contract negotiations with Brendan Rodgers, according to Reds managing director Ian Ayre.
The 41-year-old Northern Irishman has just under 18 months remaining on his current deal amid reports Barcelona are interested in appointing the Liverpool manager as Gerardo Tatino’s successor at the end of the season.
We don’t want a distraction. That’s a private matter. I know Brendan, myself and the owners are all very comfortable with that
Rodgers has Liverpool positioned at the top of the Premier League table with six games remaining, and Ayre revealed the Reds don’t want any distractions in the final weeks of the title race.
“It’s never been an issue. We will have our own dialogue at the appropriate time, we will have that discussion. Right now isn’t the time,” Ayre told Sky Sports News.
“We don’t want a distraction. That’s a private matter. I know Brendan, myself and the owners are all very comfortable with that.”
Ayre did add that he is confident Rodgers will commit his long-term future to the 18-time English champions.
“He’s just started on a road, as we all have, to rebuild this club and bring it back to greatness,” added Ayre.
“Hopefully if we achieve our Euro dream, then we will need bigger depth. We are talking daily with Brendan about this and others who deal with player recruitment.
“The owners are pleased with our progress. They will be over this weekend for the game away to West Ham on Sunday.
“It’s great testament to them. We’ve had some tough days but the owners continued to invest in the club. Great credit to them for achieving what we are achieving.”
