Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has proven a bargain buy.

The Brazil international has been an instant hit at Anfield following his £8.5m switch to the Reds from Inter Milan in the January transfer window.

Coutinho has scored three goals and made five assists in 18 Premier League appearances, and Rodgers heaped praise on the 22-year-old South American.

“He’s a wonderful player and a big talent for around £8m,” Rodgers is quoted as saying by Liverpool Echo.

“He is remarkable. His feet, his talent and his ability on the
ball.”

Rodgers admitted he would have loved to have started Coutinho in a 2-0 loss to Arsenal but the Reds boss didn’t want to take an unnecessary risk with the Brazilian.

“We brought Coutinho on and he made the field a little bit narrower whilst allowing us to maintain the two up front,” added Rodgers.

“And he was terrific when he came on. He’s a wonderful player and we would’ve loved to have started him but he’s only come back into the fold, and got the medical clearance, in the last couple of days.

“But his introduction gave us the opportunity to control the game more with the ball.”
