Luis Suarez is hoping to play at the World Cup despite the Uruguay international having surgery on an injured knee.

The Liverpool striker complained of a problem during training this week ahead of the summer’s major tournament in Brazil and the 27-year-old had an operation to repair meniscus damage.

A statement from Uruguay Football Association read: “Suarez might be ready to play in Brazil.”

Suarez was named PFA and FWA player of the year after the Liverpool forward scored 31 goals in 33 Premier League games this season.

And the Reds talisman took to Twitter to give his supporters an update on his fitness as he aims to face England, Italy and Costa Rica in group stage.

Meanwhile, Newcastle defender Paul Dummett has received online death threats from Uruguay fans after the Magpies defender caught Suarez in the closing moments of the final game of the season.

The 22-year-old defender received a straight red card after a reckless tackle on the South American, and although the challenge hasn’t been linked to the knee injury, Dummett has been the subject of abuse.
