Mark Lawrenson has claimed Liverpool’s Luis Suárez requested Steven Gerrard’s attendance when the striker held crunch talks with Brendan Rodgers last week.

The Uruguay international is expected to remain at the Merseyside outfit beyond the summer despite two bids from Arsenal and Real Madrid also being linked with a swoop for the forward.

Earlier this month, Suárez had asked to be allowed to join a club playing in this season’s Champions League after Liverpool’s failure to finish in the top four last term.

And Lawrenson reckons the 26-year-old will definitely leave the five-time European champions next summer if Rodgers’ men fail to secure a top-four finish in the 2013-14 campaign.

“I’m told that when Suárez held talks with Rodgers, he requested he was joined by captain Steven Gerrard,” Lawrenson wrote in his column in the Liverpool Daily Post.

“And I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an agreement made that if Liverpool don’t win Champions League qualification this season, he would be allowed to leave.

“I’d expect Suárez to net another 20 goals this campaign if the evidence against Stoke is anything to go by.

“The way the team is set up, it is made for the Uruguayan. Liverpool created plenty of chances against the Potters, and should have not needed Simon Mignolet’s late penalty save to ensure the victory.”
