Louis Saha: Man United’s best summer deal was keeping Wayne Rooney
Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes the club's best summer deal was keeping Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford
Louis Saha believes Manchester United’s best summer deal was keeping Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old’s future was a source of constant speculation after Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the Premier League champions had rejected a transfer request from the England international.
United also turned down two big-money offers from title rivals Chelsea after Blues boss Jose Mourinho made the former Everton youth graduate his top summer target.
Rooney has been in prolific form since his return to the first-team, scoring five goals, and former Red Devils striker Saha believes keeping the forward was key.
“The best move United have done this summer is to keep Wayne Rooney,” Saha is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.
“He has done so well for the club over the last few years and I have no doubt Wayne can continue to improve over the next few years.
“Whenever he has been in a bad situation in his career he has always shown his maturity and that adds to his game.
“He will have to prove himself and he knows that. But his mentality is that he always wants to be one of the top players and he is without doubt the best player I have played alongside.”
Saha also backed Rooney’s strike partner Robin van Persie to help fire United back up the table on his return from a foot injury.
“They were without Robin van Persie for a few games and he was a big loss, but he is back so that will help lift the team up the table.
“I am sure they will climb the table and improve. The next few weeks are very important for David Moyes and I am sure he will be working hard to ensure they win the next few games.”
