Liverpool have agreed a £22.8m (€26.5m) deal with Ajax for Uruguay international Luis Suárez.

The two clubs have been at loggerheads throughout the January transfer window over the fee for the forward but finally came to an agreement on Friday evening.

Senior Anfield officials are currently in Holland looking to finalise the deal for the 24-year-old, who is expected to agree personal terms providing he passes a medical.

A Liverpool statement read: “Liverpool Football Club announced this afternoon that they had agreed a fee of up to €26.5m with Ajax for the transfer of Luis Suárez, subject to the completion of a medical.

“The club have now been given permission by Ajax to discuss personal terms with the player and his representatives.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea look set to up their bid for Spanish striker Fernando Torres in a bid to convince Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, to consider letting the 26-year-old move to Stamford Bridge.

It was revealed on Thursday that the Blues had offered £35m for Torres, which Liverpool rejected immediately stating: “Chelsea have made a bid for Fernando which has been turned down. The player is not for sale.”
