Podolski, Owen and more: Twitter reacts as Argentina beat Netherlands

Argentina set up a World Cup final against Germany after beating the Netherlands on penalties in an uninspiring semi-final in Sao Paulo.

There were barely any chances of note during a dire 120 minutes, with Argentina’s Sergio Romero saving from Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder in the shootout, before Maxi Rodriguez scored to send them through to their first World Cup final since 1990.

The second semi-final in Brazil inevitably prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski (@Podolski10) is gearing up to watch the match: “Watching the 2nd semifinal. What’s your tipp, who will be our opponent on sunday? #team #ARGNED #poldi #aha”

Gaizka Mendieta (@GaizkaMendieta6) attempts to put a positive spin on an uninspiring opening: “First half both teams respecting a lot each other & more worried about no committing mistakes than attacking. Discipline & tactics. #NEDARG”

Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara (@chris_kammy) is surprised: “What’s going on? no goals so far !!! Never been a World Cup Semi Final ha ha”

Republic of Ireland international James McClean (@JMcC_23) is dozing off: “30 more minutes, struggling to stay awake”

Ex-Chelsea man Jody Morris (@morriskid) praises Argentina’s defending: “Forgot van Persie was playing..Garay totally dominated him for 93 minutes there”

Former Stoke defender Danny Higginbotham (@Higginbotham05) gives his take on proceedings: “Robben been the best player in this game. Messi and van persie been quiet Reason behind this is space is out wide. Story of the World Cup”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) urges Messi to step up: “Come on Messi…do something.”

Anders Lindegaard (@ALindegaard) chimes in as the match goes to penalties: “#HOL – #ARG could have played for a year without scoring!”

England legend Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) is not happy with the fourth official’s board: “1 added minute? Zabaleta was down for about 5 minutes. These added minutes are a joke, totally plucked from the air.”

Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) warns the prospective finalists: “These 2 sides could both play in the final and Germany would beat them.”

German tennis star Sabine Lisicki (@sabinelisicki) is already looking forward to the final: “Germany vs Argentina in the FINAL of the World Cup! Already excited to watch it!! #WorldCup #Rio”

Owen (@themichaelowen) is not impressed by Jasper Cillessen’s shootout: “No wonder LVG put Krul on last time. Dutch keeper can’t get near them. Could have saved 3 of them, in particular Aguero’s.”

And that just leaves Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) to have the final say: “Dutch keeper has never saved a penalty ever. My did it show. Hate to say it but I did say Argentina on penalties. Great final in store.”
