Madrid Masters: ‘Confident’ Andy Murray sets up Kei Nishikori semi-final

World number three Andy Murray beats big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic 6-4, 7-5 in Madrid quarter-finals

Andy Murray says that he is moving with more confidence around the court this year after a straight sets victory over Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals of Madrid Open.

The British number one eased to a 6-4, 7-5 win against the big-serving fifth seed on Friday night, setting up a semi-final match against US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori.

Murray required just over one hour and 40 minutes to dismiss the Canadian’s challenge and reach his 23rd ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final.

Speaking to the ATP’s website following his comfortable win, Murray spoke about his much-improved movement on the clay courts this year.

“I feel like I’ve been moving well,” Murray said. “The first couple of weeks on the clay, I tried to work on it quite a lot in my training block before I started playing the tournaments.

“Because I feel healthy this year, I’m not worrying about my back or worrying about things when I am put in difficult positions on court. That obviously gives me a bit more confidence in the movement.”

Murray, who is set to play his ninth semi-final at the Madrid tournament, won his 32nd ATP World Tour title on Monday after he defeated German Philipp Kohlschreiber in Munich.

The world number three is gearing up for the next Grand Slam, Roland Garros, which begins on 24 May.
