Man City 0 Wigan 1: Ben Watson hails an "unbelievable" achievement after his late winner wins Latics their first major trophy
Ben Watson hailed an “unbelievable” achievement after his late winner stunned Manchester City and handed Wigan Athletic the FA Cup trophy.
With the final goalless at Wembley, substitute Watson rose above Jack Rodwell to guide his header into the far post from Shaun Maloney’s corner.
Man-of-the-match Callum McManaman came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half, while Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez threatened for Roberto Mancini’s men.
Pablo Zabaleta was sent off for a challenge on McManaman in the second half before Watson’s 90th-minute winner handed Wigan their first major trophy.
“It’s unbelievable,” Watson told ITV. “The boys were fantastic from the first minute to the 95th and they deserve it.
“It’s been a long six months but to come on and score the winner in the FA Cup final is a dream.
“There are 81,000 people in Wigan and we’ve brought 30,000 here today. Credit to them.
“The chairman, the players, the manager, the staff – we’ve worked hard.
“We’ve got two massive games now to stay in the league and if we perform like that we’ll be all right.
“He [Wigan chairman Dave Whelan] has put so much into this club and out of everyone that man deserves everything he gets.”
Man of the match McManaman added: “I’m made up. I had a feeling this morning that it was our day.
“The longer it went on, we had the better chances.
“Before the game the gaffer said ‘treat it like a normal game, don’t be afraid’. I still can’t believe it.”
