Man City 0 Wigan 1: Roberto Martínez hails ‘magnificent’ Latics
Man City 0 Wigan 1: Roberto Martínez hails his side's "bravery and belief" after the Latics were shock FA Cup winners at Wembley
Roberto Martínez hailed his “magnificent” Wigan Athletic players after the Latics were shock winners against 10-man Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Wigan, who are 18th in the Premier League, looked the more likely to open the scoring in the first half, with Callum McManaman causing the City defence problems with his directness and pace.
Citizens right-back Pablo Zabaleta, who was booked in the opening half, received his marching orders for a last-ditch tackle on McManaman in the 84th minute.
With City holding on for extra-time, Ben Watson guided a header past Joe Hart from Shaun Maloney’s corner to secure the club’s first-ever FA Cup crown with a minute of normal time remaining.
“It’s incredible. We always think about the FA Cup in terms of chasing that dream and that’s Wigan Athletic,” Martínez told ESPN.
“It’s been an incredible story and it’s a momentous moment. But more than anything, it’s the way that we’ve done it. These players are magnificent.
“They’ve got an incredible sense of bravery and belief. The whole town was behind us and believed in us, and it’s a fitting moment to finish what has been an incredible adventure.”
He added: “We never lacked confidence. If anything, we lose games because we’re brave and open and are exposed at times, conceding goals.
“But these group of players don’t know any other way than bravery and playing with an incredible style. I’m so proud of them.”
Martínez also praised Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, who took over the club in 1995 and has funded the Latics’ run into the Premier League.
“It’s impossible to put into words. This is why we’re involved in football – chasing that dream,” he added.
“It’s an incredible journey and everything comes together because of the chairman. He took over the club in 1995 with that dream of playing in the Premier League and winning a trophy.
“It’s an incredible script.”
