Man City 1 Bayern Munich 3: Manuel Pellegrini was left to rue some "big errors" after Pep Guardiola's men seal dominant win
Manuel Pellegrini was left to rue some “big errors” after Bayern Munich secured a dominant Champions League victory over his Manchester City side.
Frank Ribery gave the Champions League holders the lead in the seventh minute at the Etihad Stadium after Joe Hart fumbled the Frenchman’s long-range strike into the net.
Thomas Mueller then made it 2-0 in the 56th minute, before Hart was at fault again when Arjen Robben beat the City goalkeeper at his near post.
Substitute Alvaro Negredo scored a late consolation for Pellegrini’s men and Jerome Boateng was sent off for hauling down Yaya Toure shortly after.
“We played very badly and Bayern made a great game. We made some big errors for their goals,” said Pellegrini.
“We were playing in a different way, they had possession of the ball and I didn’t think we could make the change.
“David Silva could only play for 20 minutes and when he came on we had more of the ball.
“It was an important game to see what level we are playing at so we must revise a lot of things.”
The result leaves City second in Group D, three points behind leaders Bayern and level with CSKA Moscow.
City defender Micah Richards admitted that the Premier League side were thoroughly outplayed by Pep Guardiola’s men.
“We knew they were a really good team and they showed that. That is why they are champions,” said Richards.
“They didn’t play with a striker and there was so much movement. It felt like they had an extra man and I wish them all the best.
“Hopefully we can now improve. We tried, there were some tired legs out there but we can do better than that.”
