Man City 1 Dortmund 1: Roberto Mancini admits England goalkeeper Joe Hart came to the Citizens' rescue at the Eithad
Roberto Mancini admitted Joe Hart came to Manchester City’s rescue after the England goalkeeper produced a string of top saves to deny Borussia Dortmund a famous win at the Etihad Stadium.
The Citizens struggled to cope with the attacking threat of Dortmund trio Mario Götze, Marco Reus and Roberto Lewandowski throughout the Group D tie.
And the visitors finally made the breakthrough in the 61st minute when Jack Rodwell’s mistake allowed Reus to fire past Hart and put the Bundesliga champions ahead as Jürgen Klopp’s side registered 22 attempts on City’s goal.
However, City’s blushes were spared when Nevan Subotic was adjudged to have handled in the Dortmund area, and substitute Mario Balotelli rescued a point for the home side from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.
“Joe saved us because he did very, very well,” Mancini told Sky Sports. “Today we deserved to concede three or four goals because we made a lot of mistakes. It was very strange for us.”
The City manager admitted the Premier League champions were lucky to take a point from the match, with the Italian ruing his side’s lack of experience in the competition.
“We didn’t play well and we didn’t deserve to take this point,” said Mancini. “But, in the end, it could be an important point.”
He added: “We didn’t play well because Borussia Dortmund played better than us in this match. If we want to play at the top level in the Champions League, we need to run and fight for every ball.
“It was difficult because Borussia have played in the Champions League many years and have more experience than us.”
The result leave City third in Group D, three points behind Borussia Dortmund and five behind table-toppers Real Madrid, who won 4-1 at Ajax.
