A jubilant Wayne Rooney could not hide his delight after his brace helped Manchester United end Manchester City’s unbeaten run and open up a six-point lead at the top of the table.

The Manchester United striker’s clinical double put Sir Alex Ferguson’s men ahead going into the break as the league leaders dominated proceedings at Eastlands.

United were furious after Ashley Young was adjudged to have been offside when turned the ball home after Robin van Persie’s shot had hit the post. Replays showed the England winger to be onside.

The defending champions then pulled one back moments later when Yaya Toure swept his shot home on the hour-mark, before Pablo Zabaleta drilled home a leveller.

However, it was United who had the final say, when Van Persie’s stoppage-time free-kick beat Joe Hart courtesy of a deflection off Samir Nasri in the City wall to condemn Roberto Mancini’s men to their first league defeat of the season.

“It’s fantastic,” Rooney told Sky Sports. “It’s a great day for us, to go six points clear, to beat our closest rivals and especially after what happened last year.

“We’ve waited a long time for this to happen and we know how much it means to the fans.

“Of course it’s great to score here but it doesn’t matter whether it’s against City or not. I’m scoring for Manchester United and enjoying it. They’ve had a great home record and to spoil that is a great feeling.”

Van Persie added: “We had a really good start, two really good clinical finished from Wayne. City always come back, we knew that. So it’s a really special way to end this game, with the three points in a dramatic way.”
