Man City 4 Southampton 1: Player ratings
Man City 4 Southampton 1: Player ratings as the Citizens hoist themselves above Chelsea into second place
Manchester City
Joe Hart Could do little but wave Lambert’s penalty into his net – it was that good! Was rarely called into action despite Southampton enjoying their fair share of possession. 6
Pablo Zabaleta A couple of mistimed challenges. The Argentine produced one foul too many and was punished in the 35th minute, leading to Lambert’s leveller. 5
Vincent Kompany Quiet first half from the Citizens captain. Didn’t put a foot wrong. 6
Martin Demichelis A pretty comfortable afternoon for the veteran centre-half. Did have a moment of confusion with Kompany in the second half but escaped unpunished. 6
Aleksandar Kolarov The Serbian offered an option bombing forward from left-back. The City defender’s cross led to Dzeko’s strike on the stroke of half-time. 7
Yaya Toure Scored his 18th Premier League goal of the season from the penalty spot. However, the Ivorian failed to kick on from there. Did play his part in Nasri’s strike. 6
Fernandinho Uncharateristically quiet in the first half. Surprisingly unable to get to grips with the Saints midfield and substituted at half-time. 5
Jesus Navas Made a hash of a first-half attempt. Forced a save from Gazzaniga in the second half. Otherwise, the speedy winger was kept under wraps by Shaw. 6
David Silva (Man of the match) Teed up Nasri to restore City’s lead on the stroke of half-time. Really came to the fore after the interval as he looked to pick apart the Southampton defence. 7
Samir Nasri Fluffed a chance to double City’s lead within minutes of Toure’s opener. His burst into the box was rewarded in the 44th minute as he put City in front. Was more influential in the second half, creating chances. 7
Edin Dzeko The Bosnian’s run won City their early penalty. Superb flick to help carve open the Southampton defence in the lead up to Nasri’s goal. Scored a header of his own minutes later. Should have added to his Premier League tally. 7

Javi Garcia Caught Lallana with a nasty challenge. 5
Alvaro Nergredo Brought on to put the game out of sight. Fluffed a good chance with 19 minutes remaining. Looks short on confidence. 5
Stevan Jovetic Finished from close range, capitalising on a Southampton defence all at seas.
Southampton
Paulo Gazzaniga Welcome to Premier League football! Toure stroked the ball past Southampton’s third-choice goalkeeper in the third minute. At fault for Dzeko’s goal as the Saints shot stopper failed to collect a cross. Missed another cross to allow Jovetic to score his side’s fourth. 5
Calum Chambers Caught up-field in the lead up to City being given an early penalty. Wasn’t his most impressive performance in front of Hodgson. 5
Dejan Lovren Tough afternoon for the impressive Lovren. Guilty of conceding a couple of sloppy fouls. 5
Jose Fonte Incredibly silly challenge within three minutes allowed the Citizens to take an early lead from the penalty spot. Like Lovren, he wasn’t at his most assured. 5
Luke Shaw A solid performance from the highly-rated left-back against opposition who are reported to be admirers of Shaw. Did well against World Cup winner Navas. 6
Morgan Schneiderlin Played his part in Southampton’s first-half resurgence. Struggled, like the rest of the Saints side, in the second half. 6
Jack Cork Cork was a clam presence in the Southampton midfield, playing a holding role. 6
Adam Lallana Like Rodriguez, a thorn in the side of the City defence with his constant movement. He showed flashes of brilliance to leave City defenders in his wake. 7
Steven Davis A probing performance but unable to carve out an opportunity for himself. 6
Jay Rodriguez A bright spark for the Saints. Finding space between the City defence and midfield. His afternoon was brought to a premature in cruel fashion after suffering a knee injury. 7
Rickie Lambert Happy to drop deep and look create opportunities for his team-mate. The Southampton forward placed an emphatic penalty past England team-mate Hart. Dragged a second-half effort wide of Hart’s far post. 7

James Ward-Prowse Quiet performance.
