Manuel Pellegrini praised Manchester City’s patient approach after watching his side take a big step towards the Premier League title with victory over Aston Villa.

The win leaves City effectively needing just a draw against West Ham United on Sunday to secure their second title in three years.

Now we can talk about the title. Before this game we were just thinking about Aston Villa

Edin Dzeko opened the scoring against the Villains from close range in the 64th minute, before adding a second eight minutes later.

Stevan Jovetic’s finish then sealed the win late on, before Yaya Toure’s brilliant individual effort added gloss to the scoreline.

“The team was not only very patient, we played very well,” said Pellegrini.

“We pressed well, had possession of the ball. We tried to move the ball as fast as we can and created two or three chances.

“I was absolutely sure if we continued to play the same way we would find the space to score a goal.

“Now we can talk about the title. Before this game we were just thinking about Aston Villa. Now we must win the last game against West Ham.”

Meanwhile, man-of-the-match Pablo Zabaleta admitted that the Citizens were made to work hard for their victory.

“It was very difficult,” said Zabaleta. “if you don’t score early, sometimes it can be hard but the key was we worked hard, we found space and we stayed patient.

“It was a very solid performance, nothing is won yet but it was very important to win here tonight.”
