David Moyes was in no mood to make excuses after accepting that Manchester City were worthy winners against his Manchester United side.
Sergio Aguero fired the home side into the lead in the 16th minute with a sumptuous volley, before Yaya Toure made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time.
Two more volleys inside three second-half minutes from Aguero and Samir Nasri then sealed the win for the Citizens, before Wayne Rooney netted a late consolation from a free-kick.
Moyes, whose United side drop to eighth in the Premier League table following their second defeat of the season, had no choice but to accept that City were worthy winners.
“We didn’t play well enough to win the game,” Moyes said. “Manchester City played well and deserved the victory.
“If you lose four you are not expecting to win too many. We conceded poor goals. We needed to get closer in the second but they get away and score more goals.
“We never got a grip of the game and we could never really stop them. We hope to stem that tide in the second half. We got better as the game went on but it was too late.”
He added: “The start to the season could be a lot better. We did say it could be difficult start. I wasn’t convinced when the balls came out of the Premier League bag and I’m still not convinced.
“If ever there was a group of players I would expect [a reaction from after a defeat] that is Manchester United players. They react and that is what they will do. Every manager has bad days and bad results. I am no different.”
“I have been here [at the Etihad] with Everton many times and I don’t think I suffered a defeat like this with Everton. I talked with the players the same as I would at any other clubs. They are good pros here and they know when they are bang at it and when they are not.”
Moyes also reserved praise for Rooney following an energetic display by the England international after Robin van Persie sat out the game with a thigh strain.
“I thought Wayne Rooney’s performance was outstanding,” he added. “He didn’t deserve to be on the losing side today. He was first class.”
Manchester United now turn their attentions to their clash against Liverpool in the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday night.
