Vincent Kompany declared that Sunday’s derby “meant more” to Manchester City after he helped seal an emphatic victory over Manchester United.

Sergio Aguero scored either side of half-time, and goals from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri wrapped up a commanding win for Manuel Pellegrini’s men before Wayne Rooney’s late consolation.

And City captain Kompany insisted that he and his team-mates did not play with any fear against the defending champions.

“Maybe the game meant a little bit more to us than for them,” Kompany told Sky Sports.

“We were looking forward to this fixture. We need to win these kind of games. There was no reason why we should fear the opposition.

“We played with two strikers, two very good strikers, and defensively we’ve had a good record for the past three years. It was mainly because we stayed so calm today.”

The win moved City up to third place in the Premier League table behind leaders Arsenal and Tottenham.

But Kompany is refusing to get carried away with the victory, despite the dominant performance against David Moyes’ men.

“It’s too early to say it’s a defining game. You make a statement over the course of the season. But it would be silly to give away three precious points.

“When we won 6-1 at Old Trafford I said we need to stay humble. It’s only three points, but it’s a good game to win and it gives the fans something to celebrate over the next few days.”
