Man City 5 CSKA Moscow 2: Yaya Toure hails the Citizens' achievement after reaching the Champions League last 16
Yaya Toure hailed Manchester City’s historic feat after the Citizens reached the Champions League knockout stage for the first time courtesy of a win against CSKA Moscow.
In-form Sergio Aguero scored twice in the opening 20 minutes to put the home side in charge before Spanish striker Alvaro Negredo added a third at the half-hour mark.
CSKA striker Seydou Doumbia gave the visitors faint hope on the stroke of half-time but Negredo completed his hat-trick and sealed the win despite the Russians scoring a 70th-minute penalty.
“It’s amazing,” Toure told Sky Sports. “It’s history for the club and even for us. We go through to the second round for the first time – it’s unbelievable.”
On Aguero and Negredo, the City captain added: “They’re working well. They play very well together.”
City manager Manuel Pellegrini praised his side for reaching the last-16 but the Chilean was disappointed to concede two goals at The Etiahd.
“It’s the first step. It’s an important step. This club couldn’t qualify the last two years so our first target this season was to reach the last 16,” said Pellegrini.
“I always want us to score the most amount of goals. But I think one of the CSKA goals was very easy for them.”
On City’s chances of winning the competition, Pellegrini added: “Anything can happen in the knockout stage.”
