Manuel Pellegrini refused to get carried away by an emphatic win despite his Manchester City side’s thrashing of Arsenal.

Sergio Agüero gave the hosts an early lead from a corner before Theo Walcott equalised after half an hour.

But Alvaro Negredo ensured that Pellegrini’s side went into the break in front and Fernandinho further extended the advantage soon after half-time.

“We are always trying to find more confidence and the best way is by winning important games

Walcott gave Wenger’s men hope when he curled home just after the hour-mark but David Silva immediately restored the hosts’ two-goal advantage.

Man-of-the-match Fernandinho then grabbed his second before Per Mertesacker made it 5-3 with a header in stoppage time, and Yaya Toure sealed the victory with a late penalty.

And Pellegrini, whose side moved up to second in the table and three points behind Arsenal, told BT Sport: “I’m very pleased in one sense – it’s not easy to score six goals against Arsenal – they had the best defence in the Premier League and have been the best team this season. I think that we missed four or five more clear chances to score more goals.

“But I think to concede three goals is too much for this team.

“We are always trying to find more confidence and the best way is by winning important games.

“We always want to score more goals and scoring six against Arsenal is good but I repeat, we are three points behind, we must continue working because we have a lot more things to improve.”

Pellegrini also praised Fernandinho for his impressive display at The Etihad and said that Aguero appears to have picked up a calf injury after he was substituted in the second half.

“He [Aguero] is a very important player for us, he scored a fantastic goal,” he said. “The whole team played really well today. The game Feranandinho played today was nearly perfect.

“I think Sergio has a problem with his calf but I don’t know at the moment how many weeks he’ll be out for.”
