Andre Villas-Boas admits that Tottenham have no choice but to be “ashamed” of themselves after their thrashing at Manchester City.

Jesus Navas broke the deadlock inside 14 seconds against what had previously been the best defence in the Premier League, before Sandro put the ball into his own net and Sergio Aguero scored a 40th-minute strike.

The Argentina international then bagged his 10th goal of the season shortly after half-time, before Alvaro Negredo and Navas polished off the victory at Etihad Stadium.

“It was a difficult start for us. After that, everything you had in mind goes down the drain,” said Villas-Boas, whose side drop to ninth in the table and eight points behind leaders Arsenal.

“It was difficult for us, there is not a lot of positives after that. We had a good spell of reaction after we suffered the early goals, but everything happened so quickly.

“Our only chance came in the first half. If it goes to 1-1 it is a different game.

“The concentration was not there, but the reaction of the players was positive. Everything went wrong for us, every opportunity was a goal and we paid a heavy price, too much for what we deserved.

“City were excellent, and we were extremely poor.

“My responsibility is to lift the players, there is always another game coming. We have to give a response in the Europa League.

“We have to be ashamed of ourselves, and react to a defeat like this.”
