Man City transfers: Joleon Lescott says he is determined to "stay and fight" for his first-team place at the defending champions
Joleon Lescott insists he is happy to “stay and fight” for his first-team place at Manchester City amid reported interest from Aston Villa.
The England international has struggled to hold down a starting spot in recent weeks, with Roberto Mancini preferring Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic.
Lescott was a regular in the City side that won Premier League title last season, but with his future at the Eastlands seemingly in doubt, the defender has been linked with a move to Villa Park.
However, the 30-year-old says he is determined to stay at Eastlands and is hoping to force his way back into Mancini’s first-team.
“I came to the club to win trophies. I have done that and I feel there is a chance to win more this season,” he told the Daily Telegraph.
“So I am more than happy to stay and fight for a place in the team.”
He added: “I went to see the manager about my situation and what we said will stay between us, but we both came out of the conversation happy and content with what we spoke about.
“While I would like to start every game, I am also aware that, with the strength of the squad, that just isn’t going to happen, but I am more than happy to play my part whenever needed.”
