Edin Dzeko admits he was surprised to be given the nod for Manchester City’s clash against Norwich City after the striker scored twice in a 4-3 victory at Carrow Road.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina international netted twice inside the opening four minutes to give the defending Premier League champions a commanding lead.

Anthony Pilkington halved the deficit before Sergio Aguero’s strike and a Mark Bunn own goal put the visitors in charge.

Mancini’s men then clung on despite Samir Nasri’s dismissal and Russell Martin’s brace to claim a valuable three points.

“I didn’t expect to play because it looked in training that I wouldn’t. I was surprised before the game when the manager gave the team,” Dzeko told City’s website.

“Everyone wants to play, I was back and gave the maximum.”

Dzeko has scored eight Premier League goals this season despite being largely used as an impact substitute by manager Roberto Mancini.

“Maybe it’s important to score the first chance, it’s different when you’re winning 1-0 – maybe it’s easier when you’re a goal ahead and then we got the second soon after,” he added.

The 26-year-old also believes City are becoming adept at securing battling victories after clinging on for three points despite Nasri’s red card before half-time.

“We did it once before against West Brom, we played with ten men for 50 or 60 minutes – we did well and we did it again here – it was difficult, but we worked hard,” Dzeko said.
