Jose Mourinho was left to rue Manchester United’s “mistakes” in Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils welcomed the Gunners to the Theatre of Dreams as Arsenal looked to build upon their 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby last weekend.

Arsenal made the breakthrough to put Manchester United on the back foot when Shkodran Mustafi’s header found its way past David De Gea, who made a rare mistake.

However, Manchester United were level four minutes later when Anthony Martial managed to capitalise on some poor Arsenal defending to net his seventh league goal of the campaign.

Arsenal looked to have sealed three points when Marcos Rojo’s misplaced pass led to Alexandre Lacazette edging the visitors into a slender lead.

But Jesse Lingard equalised from the resulting kick off after confusion between Sead Kolasinac and Bernd Leno allowed the England international to poke a finish into the net.

Manchester United remain in eighth place and eight points behind Arsenal in fourth spot following the 2-2 draw.

Speaking to BBC Sport following the four-goal thriller, Mourinho was pleased with his team’s desire but disappointed with the sloppy mistakes for Arsenal’s goals.

“As always we made mistakes and we paid for the mistakes,” Mourinho said.

“Many times we made mistakes behind [and] we paid for that. Today was more of the same. We had great spirit. We had a team with people ready to have a go and fight hard. That was a positive thing.”

Manchester United will return to Premier League action with a home clash against Fulham on Saturday evening.
