Paul Scholes reacts to Man United’s 2-0 win over Benfica
The Manchester United legend admits Jose Mourinho's side got the job done with an unglamorous performance against Benfica
Paul Scholes praised Manchester United for a professional job at Old Trafford after Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory over Benfica.
Manchester United were looking to book their place in the Champions League knockout stage following a 1-0 win in Portugal in the last round of Champions League fixtures.
The Red Devils made the breakthrough in the first half thanks to Nemanja Matic’s long-range strike which hit the woodwork before rebounding into the net off Benfica goalkeeper Mile Svilar.
The 20-time English champions required a good save from Spain international David De Gea to keep the Portuguese giants at bay.
Marcus Rashford replaced Anthony Martial in the 75th minute and the England international won a late penalty following a brilliant run.
Romelu Lukaku, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind all looked to take the spot-kick but it was the Netherlands international who dispatched the spot-kick.
Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes felt it was a straightforward if unglamorous win for the Red Devils.
“It’s another win,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“It’s what they set out to do. At times they were, at the times they were not so good.
“It’s Manchester United at the minute. They’re winning games which is the most important thing.”
Manchester United ended up in sixth place in the Premier League table last season but won the League Cup and the Europa League in Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.
