Paul Merson is backing Alexis Sanchez to get Manchester United fans off their seats at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils completed the signing of the 29-year-old attacker in a swap deal with Arsenal on Monday evening as Armenian playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan completed a switch to the north London side.

Sanchez was handed the prestigious number seven shirt previously worn by world class players such as David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and George Best.

The South American was handed his Manchester United debut on Friday night in the FA Cup fourth round.

Sanchez made two assists to help Manchester United ease to a 4-0 win over League Two side Yeovil Town.

Manchester United have struggled with creativity when Paul Pogba has been missing due to injury or suspension this term.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Sanchez will inject some urgency into the Manchester United team with his pace and work rate.

“Arsenal is a big club but he is moving up to the biggest club in the world,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“He has to carry the team. He has to give them urgency. Sometimes at Old Trafford it is a bit quiet. He can get people off their seats.

“It might not be by beating three players and putting the ball in the top corner. It might be by closing someone down in a dull game.

“It is a great signing for Manchester United to get a quality player like that.”

Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but 12 points adrift of current leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils are in the Champions League round of 16 and will have to beat Spanish side Sevilla to secure their spot in the quarter-finals of the competition.

The 20-time English champions haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.
