Craig Burley compares Man United flop to Fernando Torres
The Chelsea FC legend believes Alexis Sanchez's struggles at Man United are comparable to Fernando Torres
Craig Burley believes Alexis Sanchez’s form at Manchester United is similar to Fernando Torres’ struggles at Chelsea FC.
The Chile international moved to Manchester United in a swap deal from Arsenal after Henrikh Mkhitaryan moved in the opposite direction.
Sanchez opted to move to Manchester United despite defending Premier League champions Manchester City previously showing an interest in the former Barcelona star.
The 29-year-old has struggled to adapt to life at Old Trafford over the past 10 months to prompt criticism of the Chile international and his poor form.
Sanchez netted three times in 18 games in all competitions in the second half of last season but the South American still didn’t produce his electric form that made him one of the Premier League’s best players at Arsenal.
The ex-Udinese winger has seen his struggles continue in the current campaign and Sanchez is still waiting to score his first goal of the season.
Sanchez’s struggles do bear a similarity to Torres, who was unable to recreate his stunning Liverpool FC form following his then British record move to Chelsea FC in 2011.
Former Chelsea FC star Burnley believes Sanchez is in danger of becoming the new Torres at Manchester United.
“Alexis is almost like a Fernando Torres character,” Burley told ESPN.
“Torres fell a long way but Sanchez hasn’t cut any mustard at Man United not like he was at Arsenal.”
Sanchez was dropped for Manchester United’s 3-1 loss to West Ham United in the Premier League at the end of September.
The Chile international was restored to the Manchester United team for the visit of La Liga side Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The former Arsenal striker looked off the pace as Sanchez had a series of sloppy touches during the goalless draw with los Che.
Torres established himself as one of the Premier League’s best-ever strikers during a four and a half season spell at Liverpool FC between 2007 and 2012.
The Spanish striker netted 65 goals in 102 games in the Premier League for the Merseyside club but Torres only managed to net 20 times in 110 outings for Chelsea FC.
Torres did win the Champions League during his largely unhappy spell at the west London side, scoring a vital goal against FC Barcelona in the last four in 2012.
