Michael Carrick is adamant that Alexis Sanchez will prove a success at Manchester United.

The Chile international moved to Manchester United in a swap deal from Arsenal in the January transfer window.

Sanchez allowed his contract to run down before Arsenal opted to sell the South American to Manchester United as Henrikh Mkhitaryan moved in the opposite direction.

The 29-year-old has scored one goal in seven appearances in the Premier League for his new club following a slow start to life at Old Trafford.

Sanchez was overshadowed by Marcus Rashford in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool FC following another subdued performance from the January signing.

The Red Devils forward finished as the Premier League’s third-highest goal-scorer last term following a return of 24 goals in 38 games last term.

Carrick, who is set to retire at the end of the 2017-18 season, is confident Sanchez will become an important player under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

“He is desperate to do well,” Carrick told a news conference on Monday.

“He gives everything, he has done it for so many years now, we know exactly what he brings and he will have a great time here.

“I said when he first signed, he is a Manchester United player because he suits the way we play.

“He has got that excitement, he always looks forward, he is dynamic and in the end you can judge him in the first few games or whatever, but I think over time he will be terrific. I have no doubts about it.”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term.

However, the Red Devils won the Europa League and the League Cup under Mourinho to secure some vital silverware.

Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table with eight games to go and five points ahead of Liverpool FC.
