Pat Nevin: Man United signing will score more goals, but Alvaro Morata better striker
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin insists Alvaro Morata is a better striker than Manchester United signing Romelu Lukaku
Pat Nevin believes Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata is a better technical player than Manchester United signing Romelu Lukaku.
The Premier League champions were initially linked with a move to re-sign the Belgium international in the summer transfer window.
Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, was thought to be targeting Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann and Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata.
However, Manchester United managed to hijack Chelsea’s bid to sign Lukaku and the Red Devils completed a £75m deal for the 24-year-old striker.
The Blues were forced to rethink their transfer plans and the west London side completed a £58m deal to bring in ex-Juventus star Morata.
The former Real Madrid man missed his spot-kick in Chelsea’s penalty shootout loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield earlier this month.
However, the Spanish striker came off the bench to score a goal and make an assist in Chelsea’s 3-2 loss to Burnley in their opening Premier League game on Saturday.
Lukaku outshone Morata with two goals in Manchester United’s 4-0 victory over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin explained why he believes Morata is a better all-round striker than Lukaku despite the Belgium international’s proven record in the Premier League.
“He [Morata] is massively intelligent,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“He will hold up play. He is clever and intelligent.
“I have no idea if he will score as many goals as Costa or Lukaku will at Manchester United, but Morata is a better technical player.”
