Ray Wilkins believes Manchester United might have squandered their best chance to win silverware this season following their League Cup exit.

The Red Devils suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Championship side Bristol City in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

Manchester United were defending champions in the competition but an injury-time winner capped a humiliating 90 minutes for Jose Mourinho’s side.

The 20-time English champions are 11 points adrift of leaders Manchester City following a 2-1 loss to Pep Guardiola’s side at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Manchester United have been pitted against La Liga side Sevilla in the Champions League last-16 draw as the Red Devils look to win Europe’s top tier competition for the first time since 2008.

Mourinho’s men will take on Championship side Derby County in the FA Cup third round at Old Trafford next month.

Former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Wilkins is worried that Mourinho’s side will find it difficult to win silverware in the current campaign.

“One of the things about the romance of English cup games used to be the state of the pitch you were playing on,” Wilkins told talkSPORT.

“But the Manchester United players don’t have that one to fall back on now, because the pitch at Bristol City was in immaculate condition.

“They were playing on a perfect surface, they were just outgunned, and that’s a little bit sad from a side that only had three trophies to go for.

“As far as I’m concerned, the Premier League is done.

“United had the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Champions League, and you’d have to say the Champions League is a bit of a distance away at the moment.

“So, for me, it’s the FA Cup they’ve got to go all-out for now.”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table in Mourinho’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils won the Europa League and the FA Cup last term under the Portuguese coach.
